Hosea Chapter 2-4

What Promises of Blessing do we see in the last 2 verses of Chapter 1 and the First verse of Chapter 2? (1:10-11, 2:1)

National Increase
National Conversion
National Reunion
National Leadership
National Restoration

What Leader can we see as the one identified in verse 1:11?

Jesus will be the leader. We have evidence of this in Eph 2:16
“and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.”

Read Hos 2:1 in the Kings James Version and what does it say and mean?
“Say ye unto your brethren, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ruhamah.”
We have learned that Ammi means MY People and with the word Lo it translated to not my people. Ruhamah means pitied and again with the word Lo in front of that name it meant no Pity. If we remember when God told Hosea to name them it was with great judgment, now we see that God is providing us evidence of what is to be redemption.

What is Hosea 2:2-5 telling us about Israel?

The greatest sin is that of unfaithfulness to GOD. That is what adultery is being unfaithful to one that loves you. GOD is warning Israel to repent from it’s way the same as Gomer needs to repent for her actions against Hosea. If neither repent judgment will have to befall them. The same way Gomer was prostituting herself for money we see that Israel was giving herself to idols. Israel like believers of today are crediting everything we have to the wrong person. We look to thank bosses/employers, stock markets, etc., but what we really forget is that everything we have or own God has given to us or allowed us to have. We need to change our views on who to thank. This was Hosea telling His oldest Son Jezreel this statement.

How will God have Israel turn back to Him? (Hos 2:6-7)

God is actually blessing us with placing a hedge around us, so that we may not stray. God will actually protect us from ourselves. God is going to turn us in the right direction in spite of ourselves. If you ever try to walk through a thorn bush it is very painful and you usually look for another way. Well it’s the same thing here. If we try to wander from God’s grace we get stuck and jump back. It also provides a way to keep people from attacking us because it also hurts on the other side. I often pray that God places a hedge of protection around people. This is done to protect them from outside influences and also themselves.

Can you correlate Hos 2:8-9 with our nations problems?

It’s very interesting to note that we always forget about God. It’s amazing to me to read the words in “America the Beautiful” and see the verse over and over again – God shed His grace on thee. The question is why He should. We as a nation, like Gomer to Hosea, have turned from God and have committed adultery. We have prostituted ourselves both with other nations and internally. We are worshipping false idols, pornography is running rampant, and homosexuality is allowed and even supported by our government. God has given this nation everything it has and we have turned our backs and credit each other for our good fortunes. We allow abortion with no regard for human life and yet we ask GOD to bless us, what hypocrites we are. God warns us here that all we have will be taken away if we don’t as a nation turn back to Him.

This was a beautiful picture of Hosea’s true love for Gomer. Even when Gomer was committing adultery with other lovers Hosea was there to take care of her. He provided for all her wants and she gave them to her lovers. We see that picture everyday with God. Everything he has given us we spend on foolish and lustful ways.

David Guzik brings up a very interesting point in relationship to this which is:

“God gives to man the trees of the forest and the iron in the ground. He gives man the brains to make an axe and nails from the iron, and the energy to cut down the tree, the skill to fashion the wood into beams. God gives man the cleverness to make a handle from the wood, and head from the iron, and combine it into an effective hammer. Then man takes the beams, the nails, and the hammer and he nails God to the cross - where God willingly stretched out His arms, dying on the cross to take the guilt and penalty man’s sin deserved - and to make an new, restored relationship between God and man possible.”

How will God punish Israel (2:9-13)

God will deprive Israel as to what she needs. He will no longer provide her with the provisions to survice.

How will God restore Israel? (2:14-15)

After Israel is punished by God He will Allure her back and speak comfort to her. Isn’t this amazing, God isn’t going to beat her or yell at her He is going to allure her back and speak comforting words. Spurgeon says the following:
“This is a singular kind of power: ‘I will allure her;’ not, ‘I will drive her’ not even, ‘I will draw her,’ or, ‘I will drag her;’ or, ‘I will force her.’ No, ‘I will allure her.’ It is a very remarkable word, and it teaches us that the allurement of love surpasses in power all other forces. That is how the devil ruins us; he tempts us with honeyed words, sweet utterances, with the baits of pleasure and the like; and the Lord in mercy determines that, in all truthfulness, he will outbid the devil, and he will win us to himself by fascinations, enticements, and allurements which shall be stronger than any force of resistance we may offer. This is a wonderfully precious word: ‘I will allure her.’”

We also see that the Valley of Achor which meant the valley of trouble (Jos 7:26) is going to be restored by God to be the Door of Hope. And there going to sing praises unto the Lord again. What love the Lord has for us.

The word Wilderness also has great meaning here. We know that God took the people out of Israel and into the Wilderness. John the Baptist baptized people in the wilderness. Jesus was completely triumphant of Satan in the wilderness. We need to put ourselves in the wilderness when we need God to work best on us.

How is our relationship going to be restored with the Lord? (16-20)

We will now call God “My Husband”
No Longer call God “My Master”
No longer worship false gods.
No more wars
We will have an eternal relationship with God.

What Blessings will be restored? (2:21-23)

We will have a true relationship with God
God will take care of all our needs
We will have God’s mercy (Ruhamah)
We will again be God’s people (Ammi)
He will be our God

Hosea 3

What is God telling Hosea to do in verse 1 and was it an easy thing to do? (3:1)

God commands Hosea to love Gomer. Gomer was still committing adultery so it must have been hard to accept that but Hosea’s unfailing love of God allowed him to perform this action. This shows us further that this is a picture of God’s unfailing love for us. Even though we continuously commit adultery against God , He never turns from us and will always welcome us back with open arms if we repent and turn from our evil ways.

Why did Hosea purchase Gomer back? (3:2-3))

To go the extra mile. He needed not purchase her back after all Gomer was his wife. But he did this to show her that he could provide for her and her needs. He wanted a long time relationship with Gomer.

In Verse 4 what is it telling us about Israel?

Nobody to run the country, no national or political leaders
Will not have the spiritual services she needs
No graven images (ephod – the scared garment worn by the high priest and Teraphim were small objects which they carried around like good luck charms.).

Hosea 4

What is Hosea doing now in Chapter 4:1-3?

At this point he is telling Israel about the sin they have committed against God, according to God. Telling them that they are failures because they turned from God. It starts with the profound statement “Hear the word of the Lord”!!! He is telling Israel how they will forsake the knowledge of God and truth and mercy will be gone. People will kill one another because of the lack of restraint.

Knowledge, Knowledge, Knowledge (4:4-10)

Pro 9:10 "The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One [is] understanding. .
We are being told here that we just ignore what the priests are saying and pay no heed to them. We are not following what God has command us to, let’s look at Deuteronomy.
Deu 17:8-13 "If a matter arises which is too hard for you to judge, between degrees of guilt for bloodshed, between one judgment or another, or between one punishment or another, matters of controversy within your gates, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the LORD your God chooses. And you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge [there] in those days, and inquire [of them]; they shall pronounce upon you the sentence of judgment. You shall do according to the sentence which they pronounce upon you in that place which the LORD chooses. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they order you According to the sentence of the law in which they instruct you, according to the judgment which they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside [to] the right hand or [to] the left from the sentence which they pronounce upon you Now the man who acts presumptuously and will not heed the priest who stands to minister there before the LORD your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall put away the evil from Israel. And all the people shall hear and fear, and no longer act presumptuously.

The people lack the knowledge of God and His word. Everybody thinks they know enough about God;s word but the question here is can we ever have enough of God’s word? This did not leave out the leaders and priest of the time that also did not have enough knowledge of God or His word. Priest to like people will be judged and punished for their lack of knowledge.

What is God stating about Idol (11-14)?

Idolatry is the same as harlotry. Every sacrifice made to pagan gods hurt God it is like an act of adultery. In the Lords eye adultery is never excusable. God will also hold men accountable for the adulterous actions not just the woman. I kept looking at the statement “because their shade is good”, I don’t think it was saying more comfortable area here but an area where they couldn’t be seem. They tried to hide from God their wickedness. It’s like taking a cookie out of a cookie jar when were not suppose to. We look all around from side to side to see if anyone is watching but how often do we look up, for the Lord is always watching.

What is God warning Judeah about? (4:15)

We know from prior verses that God’s people were divided into 2 nations. God is warning the Southern nation of Judah not to get caught up in the sins of their northern neighbor Israel. He warns them about going to Gilgal, which was once a place for prophets to be trained under Elijah and Elisha (2 kings 2:1;4:38) but now the area was a center for false worship. Also they were warned about going to Beth Aven. Now it should be noted there is no place call Beth Aven but Hosea twisting the name of Bethel which means “House of God” and now calling it “House of Deceit” because of calf worship.
